According to Cajiao (2008), one of the challenges teachers face daily is evaluating their students. Every day, teachers have the professional responsibility of teaching a group, often a large one. This already challenging task is further complicated by the dynamics of the classroom, including students’ diverse interests, varying abilities, the relationships teachers establish with their students, and the expectations students have regarding what they are being taught.

Assuming that students are learning can be dangerous for educators. Even exams do not necessarily show whether students have truly understood the material or are able to apply it correctly. The most important aspect of the teaching and learning process is the partnership between educators and students. Neither the tools nor the technology students use have the greatest impact on their learning. What truly makes a difference is that students understand what they are learning, can express that learning in their own words, and are able to connect it with both prior and future learning.

To determine whether a student is learning, educators must first ask what students are learning, what they already know, and how their prior knowledge connects with the new content. Students should be able to understand and explain what they are learning in their own words, and teachers must be clear and concise in their instruction. Success criteria should go beyond exams because they focus not only on outcomes but also on the learning process. It is also essential to teach students to recognize success for themselves, identify where difficulties exist, and monitor their own progress.

The teaching process should not focus only on what happens before and during instruction but also on what happens afterward. Students need to know where they are in their learning journey and what their next steps are. This gives them the opportunity to reflect on their own learning process and understand how what they have learned prepares them for future learning.

Another skill educators should develop in their students is the ability not only to understand what they have learned but also to share that knowledge with others beyond the classroom. Communicating learning is one of the most effective ways to reinforce what students know and how they know it.

According to McDowell (2019), the 5 Cs (clarify, challenge, check, communicate, and cross contexts) provide educators with a framework for evaluating student learning in the classroom. The 5 Cs serve as a guide for educators, who must know their students well enough to identify how they learn, respond to their needs appropriately, and create an environment that motivates students to achieve meaningful learning. By continuously checking students’ understanding, teachers avoid making assumptions about what students know and can make instructional decisions based on evidence rather than perceptions.

The classroom environment should be motivating, supportive, and inclusive, where students feel confident expressing their ideas and concerns, knowing that they will be heard. Teachers should respond to students’ needs, consider the characteristics of their context, and focus on aspects that are relevant to their lives.

A good teacher can make a significant difference. If teachers master the content they teach, use effective instructional practices, employ teaching materials beyond the textbook, chalk, and blackboard, encourage student participation, take advantage of contextual learning opportunities, emphasize reasoning and problem-solving, plan effectively, and continue their professional development, they can better support students in achieving stronger academic and personal growth.

According to Guzmán (2010), the evaluation of learning consists of verifying, both as a process and as a product, the achievement of learning objectives or instructional intentions. In other words, it assesses what students have acquired as a result of instruction and uses that information to improve teaching.

Checking students’ learning progress is essential to avoid making assumptions about what they know. To learn effectively, most students need to understand what they are expected to learn, know where they currently stand, understand how they can improve, and recognize when they have achieved the expected goals and outcomes. Monitoring learning should take place before, during, and after instruction.

Checking before instruction begins helps identify what students already know and can do. It establishes a baseline and provides a starting point for planning instruction. It enables educators to understand students’ prior knowledge and reduces the likelihood of reteaching content students have already mastered or overlooking concepts they have not yet learned or understood.

Checking during instruction involves determining whether students are learning and making progress. This allows teachers to adjust their instructional methods, resources, and activities as needed. It also helps educators understand how students are progressing toward the desired learning goals and how effective their instruction is.

Checking after instruction confirms what students have learned and identifies who has mastered the material and who still needs additional support. This information also allows educators to evaluate the effectiveness of their instructional objectives and teaching practices.

In conclusion, effective teaching requires educators to move beyond assumptions and rely on continuous assessment to understand students’ learning. Monitoring progress before, during, and after instruction allows teachers to make informed instructional decisions, provide appropriate support, and promote meaningful learning. When assessment is viewed as an ongoing process rather than a final measure, students become more engaged, reflective, and successful in achieving their learning goals.
