In education, one of those recurring challenges is improving learning while developing students’ efficacy. One of the most effective ways to address this challenge is by adopting a flexible mindset. When teachers and students approach problems with flexibility, they are better equipped to adapt, overcome obstacles, and succeed even when things do not go as planned.

To cultivate this mindset, teachers should receive ongoing professional development on leading through change and managing uncertainty. Developing the ability to think outside the box is no longer optional, it is an essential professional competency. Educational leaders play a critical role by encouraging educators to move beyond outdated instructional models and embrace innovation, creativity, and adaptability in both teaching and learning.

As education continues to evolve, administrators and teachers must acquire new skills that allow them to navigate changing circumstances, recover from setbacks, adjust to unexpected situations, and make informed decisions in uncertain environments. Flexible thinking is no longer simply an advantage; it has become a necessity for effective teaching and meaningful learning.

Technology has transformed education in unprecedented ways, particularly through the expansion of online learning. Yet many people continue to question whether distance education can provide the same quality as traditional face-to-face instruction. This concern often stems not from evidence, but from long-standing assumptions. The real issue is not whether technology can support learning, but whether educators know how to use it effectively. When thoughtfully implemented, online education offers greater flexibility, richer learning opportunities, and encourages both teachers and students to move beyond traditional educational practices.

Traditional classroom settings can sometimes conceal student disengagement. Physical presence does not necessarily indicate meaningful learning. A student may attend every class while remaining disconnected from the learning process. In contrast, online education often makes engagement more visible by requiring students to participate actively, manage their time, and demonstrate responsibility for their own learning. Rather than reducing motivation, online learning often reveals it. Students who are genuinely committed to learning find ways to overcome challenges, whether they involve technology, personal responsibilities, or unexpected circumstances.

Ultimately, developing expertise and efficacy requires more than delivering content. Educational institutions must intentionally create environments where students become active participants in their own learning, develop confidence in their abilities, and continuously refine their knowledge through meaningful experiences. Flexible thinking, collaboration, and evidence-based instructional practices are fundamental to achieving these goals.

According to McDowell (2019), the culture of developing expertise and efficacy is one that focuses on the problem of enhancing learning at surface, deep, and transfer and building efficacy (orientation, activation, and collaboration), collecting evidence of student efficacy through a myriad of tools and questions, and taking action to improve efficacy by displaying and using visual resources, ensuring students engage in collaborative routines, and adhering to a set of agreements and protocols. This vision reflects the direction education must take if it is to prepare learners who are adaptable, confident, and capable of thriving in an ever-changing world.
